Valves for the Oil and Gas Industry
The facilities of oil and gas processing manage crude oil, natural gas, condensates, produced water, and refined hydrocarbons under varying pressures and temperatures. Valves are used for purposes of isolation, flow control, non-return, and overpressure protection in pipelines. ValvesOnly Europe provides valve solutions for upstream, midstream and downstream applications, with construction matched to the process medium and operating conditions.
Oil and Gas Valve Applications
Valves are used throughout the oil and gas value chain, including:
- Wellhead and Gathering Systems – Isolation and control of produced oil, gas and water
- Transmission Pipelines – Sectional isolation, flow diversion and maintenance control
- Refinery Units – Management of hydrocarbons, steam and utility lines
- Gas Processing Plants – Isolation and regulation across separation, treatment and compression systems
- Compressor and Pump Stations – Equipment isolation and reverse-flow protection
- Storage Terminals – Tank isolation, loading and hydrocarbon transfer
- Offshore Facilities – Control of production, injection-water, utility and export systems
- LNG and LPG Facilities – Low-temperature isolation and control of liquefied gases
Valves Used in Oil and Gas Service
Valve design depends on the process stage, pressure, temperature, fluid and required shut-off performance.
- Globe Valve – Throttling and flow adjustment in suitable process services
- Butterfly Valve – Compact isolation for larger, lower-pressure process and utility lines
- Check Valve – Prevents reverse flow through pipelines, pumps and compressors
- Plug Valve – Quarter-turn valve for isolation of compatible hydrocarbons
- Control Valve – Regulates Flow, Pressure, Temperature, or Level of Liquid
- Safety Valve – Provides protection against overpressure in pressurized equipment
- Cryogenic Valve – Controls LNG, LPG and other specified low-temperature fluids
Oil and Gas Valve Selection Factors
- Pressure and Temperature – Determine pressure class, body material, trim and sealing arrangement
- Fluid Composition – Hydrocarbons, chlorides, CO₂, H₂S and solids affect material compatibility
- Flow Conditions – Flow rate and pressure differential influence valve size, trim and actuator torque
- Sour Service – H₂S-containing production fluids may require materials compliant with ISO 15156/NACE MR0175
- Isolation Requirements – Shut-off class, operating frequency, fail-safe position and emergency operation must suit the application
Materials for Oil and Gas Valves
- Carbon Steel: ASTM A216 WCB or ASTM A105 for general hydrocarbon and process service
- Low-Temperature Carbon Steel: ASTM A352 LCB/LCC or ASTM A350 LF2 for low-temperature applications
- Alloy Steel: ASTM A217 WC6/WC9 or ASTM A182 F11/F22 for elevated-temperature service
- Stainless Steel: ASTM A351 CF8M or ASTM A182 F316 for corrosive fluids and process environments
- Duplex and Super Duplex: F51, F53, F55 or F44 for chloride-bearing and offshore applications
- Special Alloys: Hastelloy, Alloy 20 or Titanium for specific highly corrosive process conditions
Oil and Gas Valve Specifications
- Size and Pressure: Selected based on the diameter of the pipe and flow capacity
- Operation: Manual, gear-operated, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic
- End Connections: Flanged, threaded, socket-weld or butt-weld
- Design Standards: API 6A for applicable wellhead equipment; API 6D or ISO 14313 for pipeline valves; API 600, API 608, API 609 or ASME B16.34 according to valve type
- Testing: API 598, API 6D or ISO 5208, as applicable
- Special Requirements: Fire testing according to API 607 or API 6FA; fugitive emission specifications according to ISO 15848-1, API 624
