Safety valves provide automatic protection against excessive pressure in boilers, pressure vessels, pipelines and process equipment. When system pressure reaches a predetermined set pressure, the valve opens and discharges sufficient fluid to prevent pressure from exceeding the allowable limit. Once pressure has reduced to an acceptable level, the valve closes and restores normal system operation.

Automatic Overpressure Protection:

  • A safety valve operates independently of normal process control systems and does not require an external operating signal to initiate pressure relief.
  • Under normal conditions, spring force or another closing force holds the disc against the nozzle seat. As inlet pressure increases, the upward force acting on the disc also rises. When the defined set pressure is reached, the valve begins its opening action and creates a discharge path for the pressurized medium.
  • The valve must provide sufficient relieving capacity so that pressure remains within the allowable accumulation limit of the protected equipment.
  • Safety valves are therefore part of the final mechanical protection layer against overpressure rather than normal process pressure control devices.

Conventional, Bellows and Pilot Operated Designs:

Safety valve construction is selected according to service conditions and the effect of outlet backpressure.

Conventional Safety Valve

Uses a spring loaded disc and is suitable where backpressure is low and stable.

Bellow Safety Valve

Uses a bellows arrangement to reduce backpressure effects on set pressure and protect bonnet components.

Pilot Operated Safety Valve

Uses system pressure and a pilot mechanism to control the main valve, suitable for higher backpressure or operation close to set pressure.

Set Pressure, Overpressure and Blowdown:

Several pressure terms are important when specifying a safety valve.

  • Set Pressure: Pressure at which the safety valve begins to open.
  • Overpressure: Pressure rise above the set pressure during discharge.
  • Accumulation: Pressure increase above the equipment’s allowable working pressure.
  • Blowdown: Difference between set pressure and reseating pressure, helping prevent valve cycling.

Spring and Disc Operation:

  • In a direct spring loaded safety valve, the compressed spring applies closing force to the spindle and disc.
  • As pressure below the disc approaches set pressure, the fluid force increases. Once the opening condition is reached, the disc lifts from the nozzle and exposes the discharge area.
  • Full lift designs allow greater disc travel and relieving area for higher capacity, while low-lift designs use more limited disc travel according to their intended service.
  • When system pressure falls sufficiently, spring force again becomes dominant and moves the disc toward the seat. The quality of the nozzle and disc sealing surfaces affects seat tightness after reseating.
  • The spring range, disc geometry and nozzle area must therefore correspond to the required set pressure and relieving capacity.
