Control Valve

Control Valve Manufacturer in Germany

Control valves regulate flow, pressure, temperature and liquid level by continuously adjusting the flow passage according to a process signal. Unlike isolation valves that normally operate fully open or fully closed, control valves are designed to operate at intermediate positions while maintaining stable and repeatable process conditions.

Control Valve Operation and Process Regulation:

A control valve changes the effective flow area through movement of the plug, disc or other closure element. A controller compares the measured process condition with the required set point and sends a control signal to the valve actuator. The actuator then changes the valve position to correct the deviation.

Control valves can regulate:

  • Flow rate
  • Upstream or downstream pressure
  • Process temperature
  • Tank or vessel level
  • Steam and utility conditions
  • Mixing and diverting processes

Stable control depends on correct valve sizing, suitable trim geometry and proper actuator selection.

Electric and Pneumatic Control Valve Configurations:

Control valves can be supplied with pneumatic or electric actuation depending on the control philosophy and plant infrastructure.

  • Pneumatic Control Valve: Uses compressed air for spring-return or double-acting operation, with optional positioners, solenoids and limit switches.
  • Electric Control Valve: Uses a motor-driven actuator for on/off or modulating valve control in electrically automated systems.

Flow Characteristics and Trim Design:

  • Linear: Proportional flow change with valve travel.
  • Equal Percentage: Gradual flow increase, suitable for varying loads.
  • Quick Opening: High flow achieved during initial valve travel.
  • Trim Options: Contoured plugs, cages, guided stems and multi-stage trim for demanding pressure drops.

Actuator and Positioner Options:

The actuator must generate sufficient force or torque to overcome fluid pressure, packing friction and seating forces under the maximum design conditions.

Available arrangements may include:

  • Pneumatic diaphragm actuator
  • Pneumatic piston actuator
  • Electric modulating actuator
  • Spring return actuator
  • Double acting actuator
  • Electro pneumatic positioner
  • Digital positioner
  • Solenoid valve
  • Limit switches
  • Air filter regulator
  • Position transmitter

Fail open, fail closed or fail in place configurations can be selected according to process safety requirements.

Control Performance and Sizing Factors:

Important sizing factors include:

  • Minimum, normal and maximum flow rate
  • Inlet and outlet pressure
  • Required pressure drop
  • Fluid density or specific gravity
  • Operating temperature
  • Vapour pressure
  • Required Kv or Cv
  • Rangeability
  • Pipeline velocity
  • Cavitation potential
  • Flashing conditions
  • Aerodynamic or hydrodynamic noise

For severe pressure reduction, multi stage or anti cavitation trim may be required to distribute the pressure drop and limit trim damage.

Industrial Process Applications:

  • Steam regulation
  • Boiler feedwater control
  • Cooling water systems
  • Chemical dosing
  • Reactor feed control
  • Gas pressure control
  • Process fluid circulation
  • Power generation
  • Chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Water treatment facilities
  • Marine systems
  • Industrial utility networks
