Design:

A flanged butterfly valve is designed with a disc that is positioned on a rod that which passed through the center and get controlled by an actuator (handwheel, gear operator, pneumatic or electric actuator). When the valve is open, the disc is parallel to the flow, the flow continues. When the valve is closed, the disc is perpendicular to the flow and prevents fluid from passing through.

These are two common types of butterfly valves , but there is slight distinction between both:

Wafer Butterfly Valve: They are designed to fit between two flanges, it  also features a wafer-thin profile that makes it lightweight and simple to install. It lacks flange connection bolt holes and is held in place by the pipe system’s flanges. Wafer butterfly valves are often less expensive and better suited for applications where space is limited.

Flanged Butterfly Valve: Flanges on the body allow for direct bolting to the piping system. Flanged butterfly valves offer a more secure and leak-proof connection than wafer butterfly valves. They are suitable for applications that require a strong connection, particularly in high-pressure or high-temperature conditions. They may require more installation area than wafer butterfly valves.
