How do they work?

When the valve is open, the fluid flows through the hole in the ball, allowing passage through the pipeline. To close the valve, the ball is then rotated by a quarter turn motion, which then aligns the hole perpendicular to the pipeline, thereby blocking the flow of fluid. Same way when the valve is opened again, the ball is rotated back to its original position, allowing fluid to flow freely once more.

Difference between Trunnion and Floating Ball valve?

The primary difference between trunnion and floating ball valves lies in their design and how they support the ball within the valve body.

• In a floating ball valve, the ball is free to move and is only connected to the stem. When the valve is open, the pressure of the fluid forces the ball against the downward seat, thus creating a seal.
• However, in a trunnion ball valve, the ball is supported by trunnions at both ends. This way ball is held firmly in place, even under high-pressure conditions, enhancing stability and sealing performance.
• Trunnion ball valves are commonly used in applications where high pressure or large diameter pipelines are involved, whereas floating ball valves are suitable for lower pressure applications and smaller pipelines.
