What is a Strainer?

A Strainer is a mechanical filtration device installed in pipelines to remove solid particles and debris from flowing media. It protects pumps, valves, flow meters, and other equipment by preventing contaminants from entering the system. 

How Does a Strainer Work?

  • Fluid enters the strainer body through the inlet connection
  • Flow is directed through a perforated or wire mesh screening element fitted inside the body
  • Solid particles, debris, and foreign matter larger than the mesh/perforation rating are trapped inside the screen
  • Filtered fluid passes through the open area of the screen and continues to the outlet
  • Trapped particles accumulate inside the basket or screen over time, increasing differential pressure across the unit
  • Differential pressure is monitored using gauges or switches fitted at the inlet and outlet ports
  • Once the set differential pressure is reached, the cover is opened and the basket/screen is removed for cleaning
  • In duplex units, flow is transferred to the standby chamber so the online chamber can be cleaned without stopping flow
  • The cleaned basket/screen is reinstalled and the cover is resealed before returning the unit to service

Types of Strainers:

Simplex Basket Strainers

Single body strainer with one removable basket in the flow path. Requires flow shutdown for basket cleaning.

Duplex Basket Strainers

Twin chamber strainer with a transfer mechanism that switches flow between baskets. Allows cleaning without stopping flow.

Y Strainers

Compact Y-shaped body with an angled screen chamber. Suited to horizontal, vertical, or inclined line installation.

Design & Construction:

  • Body styles: Cast, forged, and fabricated construction
  • End connections: Flanged (ASME B16.5, EN 1092-1), threaded (BSP/NPT), butt weld, socket weld, wafer
  • Screen types: Perforated sheet, wire mesh, wedge wire
  • Mesh/perforation range: 0.15 mm to 6 mm (custom micron ratings available on request)
  • Cover arrangement: Bolted cover, bayonet lock cover, davit-assisted cover for larger sizes
  • Drain/vent connections: Threaded or flanged drain and vent ports for basket flushing and air release
  • Differential pressure monitoring: Optional gauge or switch connections across inlet/outlet ports

Standards & Certifications:

Manufacturing and testing are carried out in accordance with ASME, EN, API, and ISO standards. Material test certificates (EN 10204 3.1/3.2), hydrostatic test reports, and third-party inspection documentation are provided as required by the project specification.

Installation & Maintenance:

Clearances need to be provided while installing strainers to facilitate the removal of baskets or screens, and, when required, strainers must be mounted in such a way that the direction of flow on the body corresponds to that of flow in the pipeline. The differential pressure across the strainer needs to be measured regularly to identify the time when the screen needs cleaning.
